Given that installing the linux-generic package fixed the issue, I'm not
certain how important it is now. I am quite willing to provide more
information, and/or change to different kernels to help resolve this.

In the meantime, I'm now able to use the latest kernel.

I'm not exactly certain why I needed to install the linux-generic
package to get things working. From what I've read, it should have been
the default kernel when I installed Ubuntu originally, but the search
results I found on this topic were a little sketchy. I am unaware of
ever choosing to install the low-latency or RT kernels.
