I have a similar problem here: I just installed ubuntu 7.04 and then immediatly
upgraded to the newest gutsy RC.
When i try to activate desktop effects from the new "appearance" control panel
all I get is "desktop effects can not be enabled". I also tried to run "compiz
--replace" into a terminal, here is what i get:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ compiz --replace
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 10de:002d (rev 15) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: Segmentation fault (core dumped)
not present.
Trying again with indirect rendering:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: Segmentation fault (core dumped)
not present.
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
Window manager warning: "" found in configuration database is not a valid value
for keybinding "toggle_shaded"

Compiz package version is 0.6.0+git20071008-0ubuntu1
Video card is an old nVidia RIVA TNT2 model64 pro running with the propietary
legacy driver provided by the restricted manager.

Hope it will be resolved in time (even if just 1 day is missing) :)
