I'd like to make it clear that both MySQL and MariaDB are available in
Ubuntu and both are maintained well, including for security updates.
Users who care can use either of these two choices in Ubuntu today. The
question raised here is 1) that of the default: when the user has not
made an explicit selection; and 2) which one should be in main, versus
universe.
Unfortunately I think any decision in this area has potential to be
quite political and controversial. I think it would be appropriate to
defer any decision to switch to MariaDB to the Technical Board, and to
assume that the status quo will be maintained unless there is a
Technical Board decision to change it.
If you'd like to drive a switch, I suggest that you start with a thread
on ubuntu-devel@ in the first instance with a view to asking the TB to
make a decision after data has been presented and arguments have been
made.
In the meantime, I think "Won't Fix" is an appropriate status for this
bug, since there exists no agreement to make a switch and thus there is
no action to take on this bug. If a decision is made, then we can of
course change this bug to Triaged to track progress.
** Changed in: mysql-defaults (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Won't Fix
