I experienced the sample problem and found that it is caused by
difference in wvdial output format between 7.04 and 7.10.

On Ubuntu 7.04, wvdial generates console output starts with '-->' such
as below example.

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyACM0: No such file or directory
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyACM0: No such file or directory
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyACM0: No such file or directory

However, the output format seems to be changed in Ubuntu 7.10.

WvDial<*1>: WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
WvDial<Err>: Cannot open /dev/ttyACM0: No such file or directory
WvDial<Err>: Cannot open /dev/ttyACM0: No such file or directory
WvDial<Err>: Cannot open /dev/ttyACM0: No such file or directory

Unfortunately, gnome-ppp expects response string starts with '-->' and
some functions seem to broken with new format.
