bur problem lied elsewhere i found the following solution at the ubuntu
troubleshoot pages
Ubuntu
You have to edit the /etc/init.d/sysklogd script and around line 15, you
should see a line that says SYSLOGD="-u syslog" You'll need to add a '-r', so
it looks like this: SYSLOGD="-r -u syslog"Any way thanks a lot
