Sorry about the above post. Let me try again I've been having the same problems on a gigabyte p57 xcf3. Bug #1665530 also reports this. Currently I am running the latest bios for this laptop, Ubuntu 16.10 and kernel 4.10.1-041001-generic.
Initially I did not have the "i8042.nomux=1" parameter. Adding this parameter to just stop the touchpad working for me, but it seems very hit-and-miss whether the touchpad decides to work in general. Another thing not mentioned, the keyboard backlight keys (fn + space) does not work.
