Hi Phillip, Thanks for the info. I don't have windows running on this PC and haven't had for quite a while. The target partition initially showed up as xfs, thats what it was on the first attempt at install.
After the failure I used gparted and formatted the partition as ext4.. got same error on second install attempt. Grabbed an old DVD with Kubuntu 15.10 and the install worked fine to the same partition although the subsequent update/upgrade took a while:). Thanks for the quick reply though, not sure if my information helps at all. My only real concern was that the problem was with the Ubuntu remix on the Linux Format mag.
