Public bug reported:

When leaving the computer idle for a while, as required, its display
turns off, but when waking up, only a black screen and cursor appear. No
action seems to shake it off. I have to restart my system each time this
happens. It has been occurring since I upgraded to Ubuntu 17.04 from
16.10.
