Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hplip
My father (for whom I do tech support) uses an HP PhotoSmart C3180. He runs the AMD64 release of Edgy. Until Friday, he could print. On Friday evening, he downloaded updates to three packages: hpijs, hplip and hplip-data. From that point, printing hasn't worked. When I use the Cups GUI to print a test page (or when I print anything else), the job shows up at <http://localhost:631/jobs/>, but stays there for ever -- nothing prints. `ps aux | grep cupsys' shows several processes hanging around: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/cache/apt/archives$ ps aux | grep cupsys cupsys 4674 0.0 1.2 23884 6264 ? S 11:28 0:00 sh -c hpijs cupsys 4681 0.0 0.3 17692 1900 ? S 11:28 0:00 hpijs (I've double-spaced the text here to prevent unwanted line-wrapping.) The printer shows up at <http://localhost:631/printers/> like this: Description: Photosmart_C3180 Location: Desk Make and Model: HP PhotoSmart C3100 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended) Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published. Device URI: hp:/usb/Photosmart_C3100_series?serial=MY67RC602104P9 (Again, I've deliberately double-spaced the text.) The printer itself is mechanically sound: it can produce photocopies. I also know that the computer can see the printer: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsusb Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 002 Device 003: ID 03f0:5611 Hewlett-Packard Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ (More double-spacing.) Needless to say, I've tried power-cycling everything. The latest versions of the three packages are hpijs_2.6.9+1.6.9-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb, hplip_1.6.9-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb and hplip-data_1.6.9-0ubuntu2.1_all.deb. I've used Synaptic to dwongrade to the original Edgy versions -- hpijs_2.6.9+1.6.9-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb, hplip_1.6.9-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb and hplip-data_1.6.9-0ubuntu2_all.deb. I then rebooted and used Aptitude to verify that the downgrade had taken place. To my surprise, this didn't help: the symptoms are the same. So perhaps the root of the problem is in the update process, rather than the new versions of the packages themselves. Unfortunately, my Dad's just broken his thumb, and can't write. Without a printer, he's in trouble. If anyone has a quick workaround, we would very much appreciate it.
