I've resolved my issue, in my case it was either a bad usb drive i was using for the install or the app i used to create the live usb.
First live usb was created with latest version of yumi and latest iso from website. I created a second live usb with a different drive, latest version of rufus, and same iso, installation worked no problem. Currently writing this from the laptop in question.
