Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic

The iwl4965 driver (for Intel 802.11AGN products) may not function
correctly out of the box on some Gutsy RC1 systems, as the background
hardware scanning for networks appears to interfere with the normal
operation of the driver under Linux. `iwlist scan' fails the vast
majority of the time, and NetworkManager can't join or find a network.

When the module is re-loaded with the disable_hw_scan=1 option or the
line:

options iwl4965 disable_hw_scan=1

is placed in the (new) file /etc/modprobe.d/iwl4965 and the driver is
reloaded, it functions correctly and reliably.

I'm encountering this issue on a Dell XPS 1330 . A quick Google search
reveals that I'm far from the only person with the problem. It might be
worth disabling the background scanner by default on Ubuntu (until a
driver update fixes this issue) since I don't rate the chances of a
basic user finding and correcting this issue.

Dell's marketing term for this background network scanning is "WiFi
Catcher". I expect other manufacturers use different names, but the
feature is the same.

         Status: New
