I have actually used Ubuntu 16.10, installed using ubuntu-gnome-desktop*
and ran into the same issue.

My configuration however is a bit more complex, as I have 2 NVIDIA GTX
970 FTW with the latest nvidia drivers from ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
(which I could only get running after also enabling ppa:xorg-
edgers/ppa). Could not get GDM3 to run for anything (even after enabling
said PPAs).

Ended up using LightDM which was stable enough (but not particularly so
that it worked well...e.g. the monitors were always out of order).

Ended up going with SLIM instead.
