Public bug reported:

Hi,

this affects version signature Ubuntu 4.4.0-21.37-generic 4.4.6 (as
reported by initramfs), ARCH: amd64

I have installed ubuntu 16.04 via debootstrap in a chroot environment. I
can PXE boot this environment via NFS using the following Kernel
parameters without a problem:

root=/dev/nfs  initrd=initrd.gz nfsroot=10.23.23.1:/mnt/lab ip=dhcp ro

(initramfs generated with 'mkinitramfs -v -o ~/initrd.img
4.4.0-21-generic'. I can attach the whole initramfs.conf, if desired)

As soon as I enable overlayroot (using tmpfs as overlay target), the
machine hangs at boot.

In order to debug this issue, I have appended the

break=init

kernel parameter.

In busybox I can then see that the overlay is mounted. However, if I try to
chroot into it, I get a stacktrace (see attached screenshot).
The overlay seems to be readable, but not writeable.

('touch file' works, but there is nothing there afterwards)

`apport-collect` is not available in initramfs, therefore no log could
be attached.
