I created a high level tool called linux-purge to recover system when
this problem appears.

In this case you would run
sudo linux-purge --fix
(It may let you choose which kernel to purge interactively.)

The script can be used for automatic removing of old kernels, if run as
cron job or as systemd script (even with older Ubuntu releases). It can
be used for checklist based interactive kernel removing, too. It took me
a lot of time and effort to write and test that versatile script to save
your time and effort. Therefore I have not published the script yet, but
I am looking for to get something in return by crowd funding.
