Problem is solved.
I removed my old VMware workstation installation which did not work any more. Installed the newest version, changed my smb.conf back to have the listeners on vmnet8 and lo and it seemed to have worked. Only unclear to me is why it complained initially about not having the loop back even so it was there and up. Also still getting an error message during the samba installation which does not look nice and concerns me: Setting up samba (2:4.4.5+dfsg-2ubuntu5.4) ... Failed to preset unit: Unit file /etc/systemd/system/samba-ad-dc.service is masked. /usr/bin/deb-systemd-helper: error: systemctl preset failed on samba-ad-dc.service: No such file or directory Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.24-3ubuntu2) ... root@epsilon-2:/home/t441209/Downloads# apt -f install Reading package lists...
