sounds root regarding mysqld --initialize.
slightly laxer option for
mountpoint -q ${datadir} && cp my.lost_found.cnf /etc/mysql/cnf.d/....
to be really prudent you could see if lost+found is empty or contains
only whatever filename extX "recovers" files to.
