sounds logical, maybe I did not finish samba installation properly long ago I wrote your line to terminal: juha@juhaUbuntuPB:~$ systemctl status smbd.service ● smbd.service - LSB: start Samba SMB/CIFS daemon (smbd) Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/smbd; bad; vendor preset: enabled) Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since su 2017-04-02 14:56:49 EEST; 1 day 6 Docs: man:systemd-sysv-generator(8) Process: 1528 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/smbd start (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)

If you could provide the full output of $ systemctl status smbd.service that might help. Also in most cases of this kind of bugs user installed a package in the past, then did not configure it (or expeerimented), but eventually ended up with a service not starting. Now on the update the service is restarted and this is in most of the cases what is reported as the fail. There again the output above might help. If it wasn't working before the update the question is either: 1. fix its config up to work 2. remove it if not needed anyway To assist one would likely need at least the output and maybe even more configuration details. Marking it incomplete until provided. ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1678214 Title: package samba 2:4.3.11+dfsg-0ubuntu0.16.04.6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/1678214/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
