For me, it's counterclockwise. I tried setting the "lock rotation" option referenced in https://askubuntu.com/questions/874487/ubuntu- gnome-16-10-screen-orientation-spontaneously-changes (had to switch to Unity 8 to find it), but it didn't make a difference when I logged back in under Cinnamon, the windowing environment I usually use.
