Hello again, I had a quick look. The problem is openpgp-applet needs some sort of system tray to work, and Unity doesn't provide one anymore.
There is no plan at the moment to add support for native Unity indicators. There are plans to provide a gnome-shell extension in the future, once this is done it should be possible to create an indicator for that (patches welcome). Meanwhile, you can either use another desktop environment (gnome-shell works nicely), or use an indicator that will provide a system tray (there are some PPAs out there, I didn't have time to test it, but check out https://github.com/GGleb/indicator-systemtray- unity/blob/master/README.md for instance).
