Thank you all very much for the fix. After upgrading from ubuntu-gnome 16.10 -> 17.04 I was running into this issue, as frequently as every 2 minutes gnome-shell would crash, around every ~30 minutes gnome-shell would fail to recover.
After enabling proposed and upgrading I have had 0 issues.
