As an attempt to remedy the problem I installed and enabled the
restricted ATI driver "xorg-driver-fgrlx" and corresponding "xserver-
xgl" via synaptic. After reboot I did not experience any freezes, but
saw that rotating the cube suddenly consumed more processing time than
before (I guess it must use sw rather than hw to render). So I decided
to revert back to the open-source driver (uninstalling both packages)
and I have not seen any freezes yet. I have slowly enabled various
plugins (not the animations yet though) and are still not experiencing
freezes.

I'll keep testing and trying different configurations and return with
more info :-)
