I tested this from both Unity and Ubuntu GNOME. 3.18.3-0ubuntu2.1 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 3.20.1-1ubuntu2.1 on Ubuntu 16.10 3.24.1-0ubuntu0.1 on Ubuntu 17.04 I verified that after rebooting into gdm, I could successfully log in to both Unity and GNOME Shell.
