Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I have a Toshiba M105-S3041 with an Intel i950 video card (max screen
res. 1280x800). In addition I have a 22" Acer monitor (max res
1680x1050). I just installed Ubuntu 7.10 last night and I have the
following problem when "Desktop Effects" are enabled.

I use my external monitor exclusively and have the BIOS set to go
straight to the external monitor upon bootup. When booting up my
external monitor shows my desktop perfectly at 1680x1050. When I open a
window (any program) it automatically opens in the upper left corner.
When I maximize the screen it only maximizes to the equivalent of a
1280x800 window in the upper left corner. If I drag the window to the
center of the screen and hit maximize it then fills up the entire
1680x1050 screen however when you click anywhere on the window it
resizes BACK to the 1280x800 resolution in the upper left corner. I've
installed the compiz-settings-manager and tried disabling everything and
none of the changes had an effect. The only solution I have is to
disable desktop effects entirely.

When I was running Ubuntu Feisty and installed compiz-fusion it worked
beautifully. I tried using the xorg.conf file that I saved from my
Feisty installation, but that did NOT fix the problem with my 7.10
installation

I have posted this bug to the Ubuntu Forum and at least a few other
folks with the same setup (ie laptop with an intel video card and using
an external monitor with a higher resolution) have experienced this same
problem.
