Having done some more playing I find that I can also avoid the problem by setting the colours to something other than the system default. I'm also not sure that repeated flipping between accelerated and non- accelerated
I don't know if it's also worth pointing out that this system was originally installed with dapper and has been upgraded through to gutsy with very little use in the meantime (I only did the initial install and feisty upgrade on Monday).
