I am seeing this problem on my 3 installs of Ubuntu 16.04.2. It was introduced with upgrade to Thunderbird 52.1.1. It was not present in Thunderbird 45.8.0 or older
What I am seeing is I write a emails but do not send straight away, after some time if I try to send the send dialogue stays on "sending" and email never goes. If I cancel this I am seeing that the "To" field is grayed out and I can no more edit it.
