Reverting to the feisty xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.6.3-2ubuntu6_i386.deb fixes my problem. My background of grey shale scree on Moose Mountain in Kananaskis Country Alberta in summer looks like it should now, instead of appearing like the first fall snow on the rock. And I can read the grey text of unavailable menu selections. Bryan
