I can confirm this issue. However, I didn't try and use the console. So
I don't know about that part.
In my case the window manager and running programmes visually disappear
when I click on the workspace switcher on the Gnome panel. Although all
programmes keep running, they don't show, anymore. I also tried
CTRL-1/CTRL-2/CTRL-3/etc. to try and switch to a particular desktop, but
to no avail.
