The problem is that it is a more advanced version (.so.6) than
RealPlayer (and firefox) is willing to accept (.so.5).

For jollies, I tried symlinking the .6 version as the .5 version and attempted
to start firefox and got the following messages:d
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/lib$ firefox
/usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5: version `GLIBCPP_3.2'
not found (required by /usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin)
/usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5: version `CXXABI_1.2'
not found (required by /usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin)
/usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5: version `GLIBCPP_3.2'
not found (required by /usr/local/firefox/libxpcom_core.so)
/usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5: version `CXXABI_1.2'
not found (required by /usr/local/firefox/libxpcom_core.so)
/usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5: version `GLIBCPP_3.2'
not found (required by /usr/local/firefox/libxpcom_compat.so)

I have the feeling this is just the tip of the iceberg....
