I've tried reproducing this but haven't had luck. Something about my
test environment must make it difficult to hit the issue.

As I indicated on github, the xenial kernel currently in -proposed
(4.4.0-80.101) contains the patch which you indicated fixes the issue.
Could you test this kernel to confirm it is fixed there?
