I was having the same problem for many weeks and tried everything I
could find on the Net. Nothing worked. Finally someone suggested
updating the BIOS. This worked.
The laptop was a dual boot to XP, and this never hung. For me it was some kind
of Ubuntu interaction with a BIOS bug, which did not happen in XP.
Good luck, this was very frustrating...
