Public bug reported: I've been trying to upgrade an old 10.04 LTS installation to 12.04 LTS (which I'll then take up to a later version). My update manager stopped working some time ago -- it gave me a prompt box saying my system was out of date and that I should upgrade, but when I clicked "Close" on the prompt box, the manager crashed and had to be closed manually. I later uninstalled it (through the Ubuntu Software Centre program) with the hope being that I could reinstall it from there and it would then allow me to upgrade.
That reinstallation failed -- the Software Centre gives me a prompt box saying Requires installation of untrusted packages The action would require the installation of packages from unauthenticated sources. details: update-manager but when I click OK I get back to where I started. (I can't find a setting to allow this to be more permissive. I've tried running as sudo software-center but that made no difference.) It seems the absence of that program is stopping the upgrade process (which I'm trying to do from a CD). I was using the "32-bit PC (i386) alternate install CD" from http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/. I don't see, on this bug report page, an option to attach multiple attachments, so the log files from /var/log/dist-upgrade are below.
