The hanging is no longer a problem, but using an external monitor has
become much worse on Gutsy. I still use the "intel" (modesetting)
driver. It is the only driver that gives me a high enough resolution.

I cannot find out by which logic it now decides when to provide output
to the external VGA. On my home monitor, where I'd rather have the LCD
blanked, it always shows both. When I use a projector, when I really
need both on, it only shows on the projector.

The "Screens and Displays" control does not seem to do very much at all
for my situation. The "secondary screen" option is always off with my
home monitor. It is on with the projector, but only allows the option
"Extend default screen". It is hard to see whether that works since it
won't actually display both screens.

At home, I can toggle the laptop panel with

xrandr --output LVDS --off

and

xrandr --output LVDS --auto

With the external projector, this has no effect. The laptop panel is
always off.

Also, panning still doesn't work. (My expectation is that if the
resolutions of the primary and cloned monitor do not match that I have
the choice between panning and scaling on the clone.)
