After much fruitless experiment I loaded an SL7.3 KDE live disk.  The dmesg | 
grep firmware response had only one line of 'vpd r/w failed' (which seems to 
have been around for a long time) followed by a successful load of the iwl3945 
firmware.  But still no wifi connection  - until, on editing the config 
security, I was asked to grant access to the Kwallet.
 
Once I had done that, it all started working.  So it isn't the hardware problem 
that I had feared; but I'm not clear how to translate it to kubuntu.
