After much fruitless experiment I loaded an SL7.3 KDE live disk. The dmesg | grep firmware response had only one line of 'vpd r/w failed' (which seems to have been around for a long time) followed by a successful load of the iwl3945 firmware. But still no wifi connection - until, on editing the config security, I was asked to grant access to the Kwallet. Once I had done that, it all started working. So it isn't the hardware problem that I had feared; but I'm not clear how to translate it to kubuntu.
