Okay, I have repaired the damage, but I'm not sure I would recommend the
process by which it came about.
1. Reinstall 7.04 Feisty
2. Enable fglrx through the 'Restricted Drivers Manager'
3. Do the basic updates that come up.
4. Reboot.
5. Call for the Update Manager. At this point, you'll get a message near the
top that says a new release is available.
6. Use this channel to upgrade your system to Gutsy.

Because I did a clean install, it removed my fglrx settings, and for
some reason, didn't replace it. Please note that I don't want to close
this report in case it is a problem for someone else. This way was a
huge PITA, but it got done. I'm glad, too, because Gutsy rules. SCIM
works as soon as you configure it, wireless works out of the box, the
only thing I have to work on is enabling desktop effects, which was also
a pain in Feisty. Go Gutsy!
