I had run similar commands and the problem evaporated, so I didn't worry about 
responding to this email (since it only said to 'confirm' if it didn't work).  
However, after attempting another 'system security' update from the Ubuntu 
software updater, the problem returned, along with a European stop sign in the 
upper bar, and another window to send a bug report.   I returned to this email, 
and followed the commands, along with a 'sudo apt autoremove',
and the stop sign went away along with the bug report window.  I restarted the 
computer, and this time there was no 'System has encountered a problem' notice, 
either.
