I got this problem and my SATA card is Initio INIC162x too. The problem is in the Ubuntu 7.10 kernel, it got sata_inic162x, but it is disabled, according to dmesg, it shows that "LBA48 is not working so disabled the drive". My SATA disk is only 80G, no LBA48 is need, but it still disabled my disk... The problem cannot be fixed until remastering the Ubuntu CD with a custom built kernel with sata_inic162x turned on.
