Thank you for your note I Again removed and re-installed samba deleting all existence of samba including etc/samba folder. re-installing the package doesn't resolve the issue.
I created the samba folder and rebuilt smb.conf from the text file attached with your noted changes. I don't know the cause but the underlying issue isn't in the smb.conf file. The resulting issue is the smbd.service fails to launch and during installation. Trying to run samba gives me /etc/samba$ samba [2017/07/18 10:38:58.608029, 0] ../lib/util/debug.c:951(reopen_logs_internal) Unable to open new log file '/var/log/samba/log.samba': Permission denied [2017/07/18 10:38:58.608205, 0] ../source4/smbd/server.c:372(binary_smbd_main) samba version 4.5.8-Ubuntu started. Copyright Andrew Tridgell and the Samba Team 1992-2016 I tried to create a log.samba in the correct folder but it still says permission denied and being the noob that I am I don't know what permissions to set to allow it to write. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1704706 Title: Installation and removal repeatedly fail To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/1704706/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
