tbh, I have no idea if my problem is the same as those two existing
duplicates or not.
I guess it probably is. I'm hoping someone with more knowledge can
merge them later.
I was able to resolve this problem by following one of apt's
suggestions: I ran
'sudo apt install'
without specifying any package or anything, and it seemed to work -- it
seemed to installed a bunch of stuff, and then it seemed "happy" --
i.e., I tried 'sudo apt -y upgrade', and it said everything was up to
date, and it didn't error out with some uninstallable gl1-mesa-dri:i386
thing like it had been doing before.

Just last night I accidentally pressed Ctrl+C while a 'sudo apt -y
update' was running, and I thought maybe that had caused this, but I
guess not.
