Ok, this trick did not help and my PC did not make it through the night without freezing again.
However I finally found the real problem. I installed oibaf a while back as my Kubuntu was flickering all over the place. Now it seems the be the source of my problem. I deinstalled oibaf again and now everything seems fine.
