update-manager may display a different kind of error when going to install (kernel) updates i.e. new kernel(s): https://i.stack.imgur.com/DppOi.png The actions suggested by the dialog (i.e. emptying trash and running 'sudo apt-get clean' do not help, if /boot is in a separate partition. 'sudo apt autoremove --purge' would be an option in 16.04 and later.
