Seems like the server rules out the 1280x1024 modes with no xorg.conf:
II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "1280x1024" (hsync out of range)
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "1280x1024" (vrefresh out of range)
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode "1280x1024" (vrefresh out of range)
You probably need to specify the modelines in your xorg.conf for some
reason.
