I just wanted to add how I fixed this...it may not work for everyone,
but this is kind of how my problem cropped up and then how I fixed it.

1. I installed the Advanced Compiz Desktop Effects, because I didn't have
multiple desktops and wasn't sure how to get them back otherwise.
2. After that, my titlebars disappeared.

After trying the things above, nothing worked. Then I did this:

1. Uninstalled Compiz Advanced Desktop Effects, which didn't do much of
anything I don't think.
2. System > Preferences > Appearance Preferences > Visual Effects.
3. I switched from EXTRA to NONE and my titlebars came back.
4. Then I tried Normal and they were still there. My desktops appeared too.
5. I then re-installed Advanced Desktop Effects and everything is working fine.

Not sure what happened or why, but thought I'd pass it on.
