I think we should focus on the the essential. This bug has nothing to do with broken hardware. It's a regression. And as such, I think it should have HIGH importance, not medium.
xev shows the left and right buttons, but no event for middle/scroll wheel button. I've used the middle button for many years, in many (X)Ubuntu releases, with many mouses.
