Might be related to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=737628 It seems xpdf was since patched, one year ago (that's what the link above says), but the version I have on Ubuntu 16 (up to date) still has the bug. Would it be possible to apply their patch?
