A little more information about the problem: If I select Message -> Move -> Local Folders, I see a list of the local folders that went missing. And if I select one, the message disappears from the inbox and I assume is put into the local folder. However, I can't access the contents of any of them, since they pane for the local folders list is missing and there seems to be no way to get it back.
