Something must've changed in the kernel packages between
4.10.0-32-generic and 4.10.0-33-generic. with -32, my macbook pro boots
up, starts X, and logs into gnome fine. with -33, the gnome login kills
X, dumps to the fb console for a moment, and then lightdm restarts X.
it's completely unusable on my system.
