It makes sense that's what some people would prefer. Unity was designed that way.
My gut feeling though is that it would look nicer with the always-black panel. Gnome chose that and stuck to it for years for good reason. Doing so would have the added benefit of never having the weird overlap of the grey panel's left end above the launcher.
