Public bug reported:

This has been a problem for as long as I can remember:

Jed on Ubuntu doesn't display line numbers by default. To get jed to display
line numbers on Ubuntu, I need to create a file ~/.jedrc with the content:
LINENUMBERS=2;

On any other platform that jed is installable on, jed will display line
numbers by default. Except for Ubuntu (or Debian). I'm not sure why
this is the case exactly, as other distros don't have anything jed-
specific in /etc for example.

jed should display line numbers by default.

** Affects: jed (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
