Same problem here, upgraded to gutsy, and changed to the restricted driver after the open source ati/radeon driver refused to behave and kept offsetting my view pane. The driver works, including accelerated 3D, as do screensaver previews, even full screen, but after 3 mins of inaction the screen blinks, as the screensaver flicks on temporarily then switches off again. Then, after about 10 mins the screen goes black, and the monitor goes into power save. I have the DPMS setting set to power down the monitor after an hour.
