I get the same error message when attempting to start freeplane 1.6.6-1 on Ubuntu Artful. It looks like the underlying issue is the file /usr/share/freeplane/core/org.freeplane.core/META-INF/MANIFEST.MF which is present in the Debian package [1], but the exact same version doesn't contain it in Ubuntu [2]. Not sure how that might happen, but looks like an Ubuntu-only issue.
